Democrats’ Cancel Culture Sinking One of Their Own

When the Democrats get caught doing not as they say, they often ignore it and act like hypocrites. But some “offenses” they’ve made so grave that they can’t get away with it. Their latest likely victim is Neera Tanden, who The New York Times suggests will be “First Cabinet-Level Casualty of the Twitter Age?” 

 

Biden nominated Tanden for Director of the Office of Management and Budget. She has a staunch left-wing background. She served as policy adviser for the Clinton White House, advised Hillary Clinton as senator and presidential candidate, served in the Obama administration, and most recently, served as president of far left think tank the Center for American Progress. 

 

What’s holding up her nomination is things she’s tweeted about four senators, for which she has since apologized. Three moderates in the Senate, Susan Collins (R-Maine), Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Mitt Romney (R-Utah), have said they will not vote to confirm her for that reason, derailing her nomination since the Democrats need at least one of their votes. 

 

What’s interesting is most people wouldn’t think much about her tweets. A few years ago, nobody would have objected to them. About Collins, Tanden tweeted, “She is the worst,” “a fake defender of Roe v. Wade,” and accused her of “flat out deception” for her vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. About Murkowski’s praise of Republican efforts to cut corporate taxes, she tweeted, “No offense, but this sounds like you’re high on your own supply. You know, we know, and everyone knows this is all just garbage. Just stop.” Another tweet directed at Ted Cruz said, “vampires have more heart than Ted Cruz.” She called Mitch McConnell “Moscow Mitch” and “Voldemort,” a reference to the evil dark Wizard in the Harry Potter series. 

 

Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has previously confronted Tanden on her past tweets about him and his progressive allies, and has not indicated yet which way he will vote. She tweeted in 2017 that Russia helped Sanders in the presidential election. Sanders has been very critical of Tanden for allowing her think tank CAP to accept $33 million in corporate donations, including roughly $5.5 million from Walmart and $800,000 from Facebook. 

 

Many of us tweet things similar to Tanden’s every day, and say even worse behind closed doors. Nothing happens. No one really believes her tweets were atrocious.

 

The Democrats’ vicious attacks on the right for free speech are backfiring. Trump got away with his sarcastic tweets because the right supports free speech. The three moderates who oppose Tanden aren’t bound by free speech principles. It’s not conservatives who oppose her for her tweets, they oppose her for her far left positions. They’re not hypocrites. 

 

The Founding Fathers would not have been able to serve in office if they were held up to the Democrats’ new standards for free speech. Thomas Jefferson once said, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it’s [sic] natural manure.” Patrick Henry declared, “Give me liberty, or give me death!” in a famous speech requesting Virginia troops for the Revolutionary War. Thomas Paine said, “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.” George Washington said, “Our cruel and unrelenting enemy leaves us only the choice of brave resistance, or the most abject submission. We have, therefore to resolve to conquer or die.” John Adams wrote, “I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States.”

 

It’s hilarious reading the left’s attempts to defend Tanden’s tweets. Out of one side of their mouth, they denounced President Trump constantly for his tweets. The left wingers who control Facebook, Twitter etc. are constantly banning conservatives for the slightest things. Out of the other side of their mouth, they sound like conservative free speech advocates —  it feels like I’m reading my own writing — defending her. Michael Hiltzik at The Los Angeles Times wrote an entire column defending Tanden, saying “such language is fairly standard for a Twitter account.” But he’s a complete hypocrite. He wrote an article defending Twitter for banning Trump. He’s fine with Twitter canceling Trump over what he labels “lies, vulgarity and hate.” If Trump’s tweets fit this description, why don’t Tanden’s?

 

Tanden wasn’t the only collateral damage. A Washington Post reporter — no conservative —  who showed Tandem’s tweet about Murkowski to the senator was viciously attacked. The photo of Seung Min Kim showing Murkowski the tweet went viral. One person told her over email using profanity to go back to China. Someone else labeled Kim a “snitch” for supposedly messing up “another POC nomination on behalf of whites.”

 

What should happen is the Democrats acknowledge they’ve gone too far with politically correct censorship and publicly adopt a policy opposing the cancel culture. But they won’t. They have a pattern of throwing their own under the bus when their contradictory policies collide. They’ve made so much progress silencing conservative political speech through the fake offense method that they’re not going to give it up to save some of their own.  

 

Shalanda Young, nominated by Biden as deputy director of OMB, is rumored to be replacing Tanden as the nominee. We’ll probably find out this week whether Tanden is withdrawn or how the Senate votes on her. This hole is just going to get deeper, almost everyone has tweeted something in their past that wouldn’t pass the Democrats’ new standards. Who’s next?

Merrick Garland’s DOJ is out of control, for example …

The point of what Biden’s Justice Department is doing is not to bring justice; the point is to terrify and intimidate his political opponents.

Tucker continues his coverage on the DOJ and FBI’s raid on homes of people who’ve merely criticized the current administration. Highlights include:

“… an update on the Biden administration’s armed crackdown on its critics. Earlier this month, the long time FBI agent and SWAT team veteran called Steve Friend came forward to blow the whistle on what he has seen happen to the FBI under Joe Biden, and what he said was shocking.”

“According to Agent Friend, Biden’s FBI routinely uses heavily armed SWAT teams to raid the homes of American citizens who dare to criticize the administration. Now, to be clear, these are people who pose no danger to anyone. These are people who haven’t even been accused, much less convicted of a violent crime. So the point is not to bring justice, the point is to terrify and intimidate Joe Biden’s political opponents.”

“On September 19, the FBI suspended Agent Steve Friend for daring to reveal what was happening, these abuses.”

“Now, it’s illegal under federal law to punish whistleblowers, but the FBI did it anyway. And then, four days later, with Friend out of the way, on the morning of September 23, a team of nearly 30 FBI agents bristling with automatic weapons raided the home of yet another harmless man with no criminal record. That man’s name was Mark Houck. Houck is 47, he’s a leader in his local Catholic community. FBI agents pointed rifles at Houck and his wife in front of their seven children.”

“Once again, to be clear, Houck is not a terrorist, he’s never been accused of terrorism. He is instead a pro-lifer.”

“Now, Houck learned about three months ago that the DOJ planned to charge him and he offered to turn himself in voluntarily. That’s what a civilized country allows. But that wasn’t good enough for Merrick Garland’s DOJ. They wanted to punish him and terrify his family to send the right message to anyone who would dare get in the way of the Biden agenda. So the DOJ sent a team of federal agents with rifles to Houck’s home. He now faces 11 years in prison for protecting his son.”

The people of Italy win big

Of course, leftist tyrants are not happy.

Tucker compares what’s going on in Europe with our own corrupt government here and finds them quite similar. Also, Giorgia Meloni’s big win in Italy, why she won and why the American left can’t stand it. Highlights include:

“Not a lot of Americans pay attention to European politics unless they’re very bored or work at some think-tank, and that’s understandable, but it’s a shame really, because if you look closely at what’s happening in Europe, you can learn a lot about what’s happening here.”

“Despite the castles and the funny accents and the smelly cheese, Europe is not actually that different from the United States, at least in this way. European leaders run their countries pretty much the same way our leaders run our country. They yammer on endlessly about democracy, but then at the same time they do their best to avoid democracy’s most basic requirements, like free speech and representative government.”

“You run a country in the name of the people. You’re not a king, you’re a democratically elected leader. You run it in the name of the people who live there, but at the same time it’s ‘dangerous’ to allow the opinions of those people to influence your decisions.”

“Does that sound familiar? It does because it’s exactly the kind of democracy that we live in, which is to say, a fake one.”

“In fact, there is no majority in any country on planet Earth that thinks open borders are a good idea, or that considers global warming the single biggest problem, or that thinks it’s wise to quarantine the entire population because of a flu virus. No large group of people anywhere wants these things. But in the west, everybody gets them anyway because politicians don’t care what you think. Your opinion is ‘dangerous’.”

“Shut up, racist!”

“This summer, a conservative populist called Giorgia Meloni started showing up with strong supports in the polls. Meloni was no radical, her views would’ve seemed perfectly ordinary just a decade ago. But because she resolutely refused to bow to the twin gods of climate and mass migration, people panicked. The president of the European Commission, in fact, on camera commanded Italians not to vote for her.”

“These aren’t mysteries, but you’re not allowed to acknowledge them in public, period. In some places it’s illegal. But, Meloni is one of the few politicians who doesn’t care and has been willing to say the obvious, the Truth, out loud, and as a result of that, because she’s been willing to say what everybody actually knows, last night her party, called ‘Brothers of Italy,’ won an overwhelming victory in Italy.”

“American families are facing the very same onslaught from the very same poisonous ideologies. The difference is that in this country it’s rarely acknowledged except on the fringes. Meloni is not on the fringes, she’s the new Prime Minister of Italy, she will be, and she’s saying it out loud. Contrast that to what’s happening in the United States. House Republicans just spelled out what they’re running on. It’s a document called ‘the Commitment to America.'”

“You probably haven’t read it, nobody really cares. Why? Because there’s nothing real in it. There’s not a single word in that document about the attacks on the American family that you see every day.”

“It’s their hysteria and their total unwillingness to ask obvious questions that lets you in on the secret, which is they’re panicked, because they know the current system is doomed.”

“And in fact, what happened last night in Italy is the best case scenario for them, because it was a peaceful transfer of power. That’s a good thing, that’s what you want. In a democracy, people should be allowed to have some influence on the priorities of the government that claims to represent them. And when they speak in an election, the people who’ve been repudiated have a moral obligation to pause just for one second and ask, ‘Why didn’t they like what I was offering them?'”

“But they never ask themselves that. They never take any blame whatsoever.”
