The phrase can sound uncomfortable to modern ears: the fear of the Lord.
Yet throughout Scripture, it is one of the great starting points of spiritual awakening.
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” (Proverbs 9:10, NIV)
This kind of fear is not terror that pushes us away from God. It is awe that draws us near. It is a holy recognition of who He is and who we are. It is the understanding that God is not casual, not common, not to be treated lightly.
And when that awareness returns to the hearts of His people, revival begins.
When we see God rightly, repentance becomes natural. Worship becomes vibrant. Obedience becomes urgent. Casual Christianity gives way to surrendered living.
In times of spiritual decline, people tend to shrink God down—to make Him manageable, comfortable, familiar. But revival lifts our eyes again. We remember His holiness, His majesty, His authority, and His mercy.
We begin to tremble—and rejoice—at the same time.
The fear of the Lord awakens us to the weight of His glory. It reminds us that we are called by His name. It pulls us away from sin and back toward intimacy with Him.
And here’s the beautiful paradox: when we rightly fear God, we no longer have to fear anything else.
As we pray for revival in our lives, our churches, and our nation, let’s ask God to restore this missing treasure. A renewed vision of His greatness produces renewed devotion among His people.
Where the fear of the Lord returns, the fire of revival follows.
